ARE you a singer looking for a choir to join?
The South London Singers, Beckenham's friendly choir, welcomes all applications for membership and are particularly seeking to recruit Sopranos, Tenors and Basses
Experience and the ability to read music are an advantage. All members are asked to undertake a simple audition to check their range but choral experience and the ability to sight-read are not essential. Potential new members are made welcome at an open rehearsal at the beginning of each terms.
Weekly practice times. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings, from 7.45 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. at Beckenham Methodist Church, Bromley Road, Beckenham. This venue is on several bus routes and is just a few minutes from Beckenham Junction railway station and Tramlink terminus, enabling easy access from London Victoria, Bromley, Orpington, Croydon and the surrounding area.
Annual Subscription. The standard subscription is currently £105 per annum, and payment can be spread over three terms.
This busy,
friendly choir performs three or four concerts a year in various local
venues, including the Beckenham Methodist Church and
St. George's Church, Beckenham's Anglican parish church
(pictured opposite – photo: Tessa Gould). The choir performs a broadly
based repertoire of music in these venues, featuring familiar composers such
as Handel and Bach alongside unjustly neglected and rarely heard composers
such as Joseph Jongen and Michael Haydn. The SLS also occasionally appears
outside the Bromley borough. In October 2000, it joined forces with the
Croydon Bach Society for a performance in St. James's. Piccadilly.
Members of the choir are invited to meet socially, in a local hostelry, after the rehearsal. Social events include a Christmas Party and a summer barbecue.
