Goldsmiths Choral Union prides itself on being an independent concert promoter

staging its own concerts in major London concert venues such as the Barbican Hall.
Help us to keep making music
Bringing good music to the public in central London is a costly business for an independent voluntary promoter such as Goldsmiths Choral Union. Did you know that putting on a performance of Elijah at the Royal Festival Hall will set you back at least £25,000? Like all music promoters, both amateur and professional, GCU can only continue its work if it can secure adequate funds. But although it actively pursues all types of sponsorship, GCU also works with famous UK charities in mutually beneficial joint ventures.
Since its foundation in 1932, GCU has dedicated itself to its three main aims: (1) to promote high-quality performances of adventurous musical works in London's major concert venues; (2) to educate and broaden the musical experience of its members and audiences not only through its performances and programmes but also through music workshops and open rehearsals; and (3) to support youth in the field of music by bringing forward exciting young artists, maintaining links with music training establishments, and actively recruiting young members, mainly through special arrangements for studients. In addition to its regular appearances in London concert halls, the choir has broadcast on both radio and television, made a number of recordings, and toured abroad.
GCU is a properly constituted company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. It is self-financing, generating as much of its income as possible from concert-ticket sales, members' subscriptions, and the sale of advertising space in its concert programmes. It often collaborates with other choirs or on projects promoted by other organizations. From time to time, the choir has also obtained a certain amount of public arts funding.
GCU has worked with a number of well-known UK charities, including Save the Children and ChildLine. A sponsorship deal with BT allowed the choir to help other charities through its carol concerts, such as the Children's Society, Crisis and Help the Aged. Other charities who have benefited from GCU's performances, particularly at Christmas, have included the Elizabth Fitzroy Homes, the Jacqueline Du Pré Memorial Fund, and the British Red Cross.
