GCU'S VISIT TO PRAGUE – JULY 2007
Left, the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin, Hejnice, in the Liberce region of the Czech Republic. Right, the Church of St Simon and St Jude, in the heart of the Czech capital, Prague. Goldsmiths Choral Union paid its first visit to the Czech Republic from 27 to 30 July 2007. But we didn't just go to Prague. The choir gave two performances, one in the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin in Hejnice, northern Bohemia, as part of the Basilica's regular Saturday series, the other at the Church of St Simon and St Jude, in Prague. Artistically, it was one of the most satisfying tours the choir has made. In fact, chairman David Hayes unequivocally called it the best tour to date. The programme in each case was a reprise of the concert we gave at St George's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Westminster Bridge Road, in June: Schubert's Ständchen, and Psalm 23, Brahms' Liebeslieder waltzes, and Schubert's Mass in E flat. Audiences were large and extremely appreciative, and it was a pleasure to sing to them. But along with the music, there was also plenty of time for other sorts of fun too. For a purely personal view of the trip, see the Webmaster's blog. For some nice photos of the trip, see Dan Berney's photos on the Google Picasa Web Albums site. |
