Schubert’s last year, 1828, saw the composition of many great works including the Mass in E flat and Mirjams Siegesgesang, written in homage to Handel and set for soprano, chorus and solo piano. Brahms was the editor of the first Schubert collected edition, and the piano duet version of the Mass in E flat to be given in this performance, although it carries no clear attribution, may well have been prepared by Brahms for domestic use. Brahms’s own charming Liebeslieder Waltzes provide a perfect secular foil.
