GCU in the 1930s GCU in 2003

GCU yesterday and today. About 70 years separate these pictures. In the 1930s the choir performed at the Great Hall of Goldsmiths' College. Today it appears regularly at major London venues such as the Barbican Centre.

The story of GCU

GCU has a history going back three-quarters of a century to 1932. Here we dip into that history to bring you some of the choir's many achievements, together with appreciations of some of the key people involved.

Acknowledgements. Most of the material on our Archives pages first appeared in the Goldsmiths Choral Union Jubilee Brochure, published by the choir in 1982. The history section was contributed by Karen Crossley and the booklet was edited by William Gould. Later material has been added from the choir's sponsorship pack and concert programmes. Other contributions have been made by David Hayes and Brian Wright. We would also like to thank the choir's archivist, Janey Antoniou.

Dear Mr Johnston,

How splendid that the Goldsmiths are celebrating their Golden Jubilee!

I expect I am the oldest patron of the Choir and as such I should like to send all greetings to everyone and to hope that they will sing successfully for another happy 50 years.

I have many exciting memories of spendid performances with the choir and always had the greatest admiration for Mr Haggis as a spendid choir-trainer

    All good wishes,

      Yours ever

Adrian C. Boult
